The trial proceedings in a case involving the staff members of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s office in Wayanad, accused of causing damage to a photograph of Mahatma Gandhi kept inside the office, have been temporarily halted by the Kerala High Court.
Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan issued an interim order suspending the proceedings against the four staff members of Rahul Gandhi, who were facing charges in a case registered last year. The case was initiated following an incident in June, where the student wing of the CPI(M) allegedly vandalized the office during a protest. Subsequently, a complaint was filed by a lawyer alleging damage to the photograph of Mahatma Gandhi by unidentified individuals.
The ruling CPI(M) in Kerala had accused Rahul Gandhi’s personal staff of deliberately damaging Mahatma Gandhi’s photo to falsely implicate SFI activists.
In its order dated July 13, the court also issued a notice to the complainant in the case, which was registered in 2022. The petitioners, represented by Advocate T Asif Ali, claimed that they were wrongly added as accused, despite none of the witnesses attributing any role to the four staff members in the damage caused to Mahatma Gandhi’s photo at the office.
The alleged incident occurred during a protest march organized by the SFI against the Congress leader, which escalated into violence.
