The judiciary, the only stop where a citizen seeks justice, justice irrespective of all the differences, justice that strengthens the faith in law and order. The same judiciary has Collegium which seems a little less democratic on democratic soil, at least to the lawmakers. While it might be doing good to the people of India, sometimes it does make eyebrows-raising decisions.
The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the transfer of Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh in its resolution on the 12th of July, 2023. The Collegium comprising CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, and Justice Surya Kant recommended the transfer of three High Court judges, namely – Justice Manoj Bajaj, Justice DK Singh, Justice Gaurang Kanth.
As per the recommendation, Justice Manoj Bajaj, currently posted in Punjab and Haryana High Court, has been recommended for Allahabad High Court whereas Justice DK Singh has to be transferred to Kerala High Court from Allahabad. Also, Justice Gaurang Kanth has been recommended to Calcutta High Court from Delhi.
A proposal for these transfers took place on the 5th of July, 2023 after which Justice DK Singh requested his transfer to a nearby area which doesn’t seem to be accepted.
Having pursued his LLB from Allahabad University and LLM from Delhi University, Justice Singh joined Allahabad HC as an additional judge in September 2017 and took oath as a permanent judge in September 2019.
Justice Singh has always been praised for taking prompt actions and decisions in an era when it takes decades for a case to see what justice looks like. He is one of those who possess a spine of steel and dare to call a spade a spade. He gave strong verdicts in several cases when no other judge was even prepared to sit for the hearing. It was he who made mafias and mafia-turned-politicians kneel in front of the judiciary.
Not only has he done justice professionally but also has been a man with a human heart. He helped a Dalit student financially with her admission fee for enrollment in an IIT seeing her capabilities and zeal towards studies.
Well, the ball is in the court of the central government now as it is the law ministry that has to stamp the final decision on the Collegium’s recommendation. But what Collegium is doing to its dutiful assets is very evident.
