The protest by junior doctors over the rape and murder of a fellow medic in August entered its fifth day on Saturday, with demonstrators preparing to continue their sit-in indefinitely.
Late Friday night and early Saturday morning, scattered rainfall caused considerable inconvenience, drenching many of the protesting doctors. Despite the challenging conditions, the junior doctors remained resolute and continued their demonstration.
In response to the adverse weather, various individual and community-based organizations stepped in to support the protesters. They further provided tarpaulins to shield the demonstrators from the rain. The protesting doctors set up makeshift shelters using the tarpaulins and remain determined to continue their sit-in until they meet their demands.

The junior doctors have rejected claims made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday, who suggested that the protest had political motivations. The doctors assert that their demonstration is solely focused on seeking justice, not political gain.
The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF), which is organizing the protests, has emphasized that the movement is apolitical. They highlighted their refusal to allow Opposition leaders, including BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay and legislator Agnimitra Paul, to join the protests, as evidence of their commitment to a non-political agenda. Both leaders faced “Go Back” slogans from the demonstrators.
However, the junior doctors have consistently pushed back against any attempts to politicize their protest, maintaining that their sole focus remains on achieving justice for their colleague.
