National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met his Canadian counterpart Nathalie G Drouin in New Delhi, discussing counterterrorism, transnational crime and intelligence exchange.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that both sides acknowledged momentum for rebuilding trust and enhancing cooperation at the highest leadership level.
The meeting, held on September 18, followed an earlier discussion between PM Narendra Modi and PM Mark Carney in Kananaskis.
Leaders described the June meeting on the G7 sidelines as constructive, agreeing to restore High Commissioners and revive stalled mechanisms.
The NSAs deliberated on regional and global developments, agreeing to strengthen security cooperation and reinforce existing channels of structured engagement.
They also explored priority areas for future collaboration, adopting a forward-looking approach to open a new bilateral relationship chapter.
The MEA emphasised that both nations would work closely together, promoting trust, security cooperation, and collaborative responses against shared challenges.
On Friday, MEA reacted strongly to reported Khalistani threats against Indian missions, particularly in Vancouver, stressing the host government’s security responsibility.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that Canada must ensure Indian diplomatic premises remain fully protected whenever credible threats surface.
He added India consistently engages host governments regarding concerns, highlighting Canada’s obligations under international diplomatic conventions and security frameworks.
This reaction followed Thursday’s Doval-Drouin dialogue, part of ongoing bilateral consultations aimed at deepening the security partnership between Ottawa and New Delhi.
The meeting also reflected the joint intent to revive working-level mechanisms across sectors, including trade, connectivity and people-to-people exchange.
Ties between India and Canada had deteriorated after Justin Trudeau alleged India’s involvement in Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing.
India rejected Trudeau’s allegations as absurd, accusing Canada of accommodating extremist elements undermining bilateral trust and worsening diplomatic tensions significantly.
