IMD predicts heavy rain in Chennai today, Schools-colleges closed

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its morning weather forecast that Chennai and a few other Tamil Nadu districts would experience heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning today. Schools in the districts of Chennai, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur are closed.

On Wednesday, several low-lying areas of Chennai and other Tamil Nadu districts were severely battered by heavy rain. Images of nearly knee-deep water inundating several streets in Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Thiruvallur appeared on social media. Massive traffic jams were another effect of the continuous rain in Chennai.

For those who require assistance due to rain, the Chennai Corporation has established helpline numbers throughout the city. On December 2 and 3, the Met Department released an orange alert for Tamil Nadu’s capital and surrounding districts, indicating the possibility of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

A well-marked low pressure area is still present over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the nearby south Andaman Sea, according to the IMD’s most recent bulletin. This area is expected to move west-northwestward today and become a depression over the Bay of Bengal. On December 2, it is anticipated to strengthen into a cyclonic storm.

Up to five NDRF teams have been sent to the districts of Chennai, Chengalpet, and Villupuram in response to the cyclone warning.

Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered officials, ministers, MLAs, and local body representatives to provide all necessary aid to people in the areas affected by the heavy rain in Tamil Nadu.

The IMD has also predicted rain and thunderstorm activity for the next five days, through December 4, in other southern states and Union territories like Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
