Union Home Minister Amit Shah urged Punjab voters to support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and pledged to eliminate the state’s ‘chitta’ trade by December 31, 2029. Shah appealed at a rally in Jalandhar, marking the culmination of the BJP’s Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra.
Shah said the BJP would make a drug-free Punjab its central election issue. He appealed particularly to the state’s mothers and young people. He linked the pledge to the party’s promise to tackle the narcotics trade if elected to power in Punjab.
The campaign came amid a longstanding public debate over drug abuse in Punjab. Shah accused the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government of allowing the illicit ‘chitta’ trade to flourish.
These remarks represent Shah’s political allegation against the state government.
The BJP’s 13-day Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra travelled around 4,000 kilometres across all 117 Assembly constituencies.
The campaign focused on drug awareness and village-level outreach. It began on September 18 and concluded with Shah’s Jalandhar rally on September 30.
Shah reiterated his December 31, 2029 deadline during the rally. He said the BJP would work towards ending the drug trade if voters gave the party an opportunity to form the government.
The accompanying campaign message was issued in Hindi and Punjabi. A video from the rally showed Shah addressing a large gathering and emphasising the BJP’s drug-free Punjab pledge.
The remarks place narcotics control at the centre of the BJP’s political campaign in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly election.
