Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday described the Cabinet’s approval of the Green Energy Corridor Phase III (GEC-III) scheme as a “big push” towards India’s goal of reaching 900 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2035.
The scheme will enable the evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable energy across states and Union Territories.

He said the project will support 135 GW of renewable energy evacuation and 50 GWh of battery storage. It will strengthen power grids and create jobs in manufacturing, construction and energy storage.
India’s total installed power capacity reached 552 GW in July 2026, rising from 249 GW in 2014. Non-fossil capacity stood at 300.50 GW as of July 31, 2026. It accounted for more than 54 per cent of total installed capacity.
India ranks third globally in renewable energy capacity. Solar capacity reached 164.59 GW by July 31, 2026, up from 2.8 GW in 2014. Solar now forms the largest share of India’s renewable capacity.
India became the world’s second-largest solar growth market in 2025. It added more than 37 GW, compared with 34 GW added by the US.
The GEC-III scheme targets completion by FY 2032-33. It carries a total outlay of Rs 1,86,405 crore, including Rs 1,36,378 crore for Intra-State Transmission Systems and Rs 50,000 crore for 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems.
The scheme provides Rs 54,082 crore in central financial support. It will deploy 50 GWh of BESS to improve grid flexibility, manage intermittency, congestion and peak-hour curtailment, and meet non-solar-hour demand.
The initiative is expected to create skilled jobs in energy storage, operations, maintenance and grid management.
