Protesting farmer unions, Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, on Tuesday urged the Union government to initiate talks to resolve the stalemate.
The appeal came as the Supreme Court extended the Punjab government’s deadline to hospitalize fasting farm leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal until January 2. Dallewal has been on a hunger strike since November 26, demanding legal guarantees for the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
Farmers Call For Union Government Dialogue
Senior farmer leader Kaka Singh Kotra criticized the Union government for its silence. “If the government doesn’t act, how can Dallewal consider medical aid? We are ready for dialogue, but they are not interested,” he said.
Kotra emphasized that neither the protesting unions nor the Punjab government is involved in the Supreme Court case. “Our fight is with the Union government. They must address our demand for MSP guarantees,” he added.
Punjab officials have held multiple discussions with Dallewal but failed to convince him to accept medical treatment.
Concerns Over Dallewal’s Health
Farmer leaders and doctors warned about Dallewal’s deteriorating health. His blood pressure fluctuated, with a systolic value of 101 and diastolic of 74. Blood tests showed a critical ketone level of 6.9 mmol/L, indicating acute starvation.
Bharatiya Kisan Union (Dakounda) general secretary Jagmohan Singh urged the Centre to act immediately. “The onus is on the Union government to save Dallewal’s life and address the farmers’ grievances,” he said.
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) also urged the Centre to resolve the protest and ensure Dallewal’s safety. Kirti Kisan Union leader Raminder Singh Patiala and All-India Kisan Federation president Prem Singh Bhangu criticized the government for delaying action.
Farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohar reiterated that the government’s intervention is crucial. “Efforts to find a solution are lacking. The matter cannot be prolonged further,” he said.
