External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar Visits Kuwait, Meets Top Leaders

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar concluded an official visit to Kuwait on Sunday, meeting with Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah and Prime Minister Sheikh Muhammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah.

Jaishankar shared details of his visit in a post on X, expressing his honor at meeting the Crown Prince. “I had the privilege of meeting His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, the Crown Prince of Kuwait. I conveyed the greetings of President and Prime Minister. India and Kuwait share centuries-old bonds of goodwill and friendship, and our contemporary partnership is growing steadily. I thanked him for his guidance and insights on elevating our ties,” Jaishankar said.

The External Affairs Minister also discussed his meeting with the Kuwaiti Prime Minister. “I was pleased to meet His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Abdullah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Prime Minister of Kuwait. I conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings and appreciated his perspectives on strengthening India-Kuwait relations. I valued his views on advancing our economic cooperation,” Jaishankar noted.

During his one-day visit, Jaishankar and Kuwaiti officials reviewed various aspects of the bilateral relationship, including political, trade, investment, energy, security, cultural, consular, and people-to-people contacts.

Upon arrival, Jaishankar received a warm welcome from Kuwait’s Foreign Minister, Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya.

Jaishankar previously visited Kuwait from June 9-11, 2021, during which he met the Prime Minister and delivered a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Amir of Kuwait.

India and Kuwait have historically enjoyed friendly relations, with deep trade ties dating back to before 1961, when the Indian rupee served as Kuwait’s currency. Before oil discoveries, Kuwait’s economy relied on maritime activities such as shipbuilding, pearl diving, and trade with India, exchanging goods like dates, Arabian horses, and pearls for wood, cereals, clothing, and spices.
