Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk has filed a petition against his arrest in the Delhi High Court. The court will hear the petition on October 3. A lawyer submitted the petition, prompting the bench led by Chief Justice Manmohan to request all documents today.
Arrest at Sindhu Border
Wangchuk faced arrest from the Sindhu border on Monday night. He arrived in Delhi after completing a 700 km padyatra. Police also detained about 120 people who accompanied him. As Wangchuk entered Delhi, police stopped him, citing Indian Penal Code Section 168. This law prohibits groups of more than five people from gathering in the area.
Wangchuk intended to protest at Mahatma Gandhi’s Samadhi at Rajghat in Delhi. In response, Delhi Police enforced Section 163 of the Indian Penal Code for six days, restricting public gatherings.
Demanding Statehood for Ladakh
The padyatra was organized by the Leh Apex Body, which, along with the Kargil Democratic Alliance, has campaigned for Ladakh’s statehood. Their demands include inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, the early initiation of the recruitment process with a Public Service Commission for Ladakh, and separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil districts.
