Dr Dinesh Sharma, Rajya Sabha MP and former Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, addressed a large gathering of scientists and researchers at the Hindi Conference organised under the Hindi Fortnight celebrations at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute.
Speaking as the chief guest, he emphasised that India’s linguistic diversity is an invaluable part of the nation’s cultural heritage.
He highlighted the efforts of the central government to promote languages across the country, describing these initiatives as a means to deepen democracy and preserve shared national identity.
In the era of technology, Dr Sharma noted, languages are transcending regional boundaries, becoming a collective heritage of the nation.
Hindi as a Unifying Language
Dr Sharma stated that Hindi has served as a bridge between multiple languages, expressing public sentiment and carrying the spirit of the independence movement.
He noted that Hindi’s development has occurred in collaboration with other regional languages, strengthening national unity.
The conference also recognised the inclusion of regional words in Hindi, reflecting its evolving role as a national language.
He underlined Hindi’s deep connections with southern India, citing Andhra Pradesh as the birthplace of modern Hindi and the role of Kerala’s temples and educational institutions in promoting dialogue through the language.
Prominent leaders from Gujarat, including Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel, further contributed to its acceptance across regions.
Dr Sharma highlighted that during the Amrit Kaal, Hindi and regional languages are increasingly used in government administration, making services and official documents accessible in citizens’ native languages.
He described these measures as revolutionary steps to reduce the gap between the government and the public.
He also noted the global reach of Hindi, with teaching and research underway in countries such as Nepal, the UK, and Mauritius.
Digital initiatives and language translation software developed by the Department of Official Languages are further facilitating linguistic accessibility.
The event concluded with poetry by Pankaj Prasun and recognition of scientists contributing to Hindi development.
