In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at New Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital have successfully carried out a complex surgery to remove a huge tumor from a 77-year-old patient, giving the patient a new lease of life. The tumor, equivalent to the weight of five newborn babies, weighed about 14 kilograms (kg) and was more than two and a half feet long, posing a serious health risk to the patient.
The tumor occupied 85% of stomach
The patient, a former employee of the UAE Air Force Ground Technical Team, Dubai, had been experiencing discomfort and abdominal discomfort for the past one to two years. On evaluation, it was discovered that a huge tumor had occupied about 85 percent of his stomach, putting pressure on vital organs such as the liver, kidneys, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, bladder and spleen.
Multi-disciplinary team took out the 14 kg tumor
Chief Surgeon, Dr. Saumitra Rawat, as Chairman and Chief Expert in Surgical Gastroenterology, GI and HPB Onco-Surgery, and Liver Transplantation at the Indian Institute of Medical Sciences at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, led a multidisciplinary team at the hospital. It included GI and HPB onco-surgeons, urologists, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, and ICU specialists who worked together to perform this complex surgery.
Dr. Saumitra Rawat explains the complex condition of this operation and said that this tumor, which looks like lymphosarcoma, presented a lot of challenges to us due to its size and location. For this, they had to use traditional open surgery methods, because the tumor had taken over the entire stomach, due to which there was no space left in the stomach for minimally invasive surgery.

Traditional surgical method came handy
Despite the high-risk nature of the surgery, which involved separating the tumor from vital structures such as the liver, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, right kidney, bladder and dealing with its extension into the right inguinal region, the surgical team executed the procedure flawlessly. Performed properly, ensuring minimal blood loss and preserving the integrity of the organ.
“The successful outcome of this surgery highlights the importance of combining traditional surgical techniques with minimal access procedures,” said Dr. Rawat. “The patient is recovering well following surgery, which is an important milestone in his journey toward health and well-being.”
