A court has handed down a four-year rigorous imprisonment sentence to a man involved in rioting and looting during the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots. The Additional Sessions Judge at Karkardooma Court remarked that the riotous acts were driven by hatred, while the robbery and loot were motivated by greed.
In January, two individuals, Noor Mohammad (Noora) and Nabi Mohammad, were convicted in a case registered at Khajuri Khas Police Station. Nabi Mohammad, charged under Section 411 for buying a stolen mobile phone, and Noora, convicted under various sections of the IPC, were involved in a riotous mob that vandalized shops, set fire to property, and robbed people in the area, violating prohibitory orders. Noora received a four-year rigorous imprisonment sentence, with all sentences running concurrently.
The judge highlighted that both individuals are illiterate and come from a low-income background. Recognizing their financial incapacity to compensate the victims for their losses, the court directed the government to provide compensation to the victims.
