On Tuesday, Delhi’s Environment Minister Gopal Rai launched a strong attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing the party of failing to take meaningful action against the soaring pollution levels in the national capital.
His comments come amid ongoing concerns about deteriorating air quality, especially as winter approaches.
In a statement to IANS, Rai criticized the BJP-led state governments of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan for their inadequate measures to combat pollution.
The Environment Minister stated, “There seems to be no trace of the Central Environment Minister either.”
Rai further accused the BJP of worsening the pollution crisis. He asserted, “The BJP’s agenda appears to be to increase pollution and at the same time chant slogans. Our government, on the other hand, is focusing on reducing it,” urging the opposition to collaborate in finding solutions.
GRAP 2 Activated In NCR As AQI Exceeds 300, Says Gopal Rai
The Environment Minister detailed the implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), a systematic approach activated according to the Air Quality Index (AQI).
Rai explained, “GRAP 1 is activated when AQI exceeds 200, and GRAP 2 when it goes above 300. From today, GRAP 2 has implemented across North India, particularly in the NCR region. We are working with officials to ensure its effective enforcement in Delhi.”
He also highlighted measures aimed at reducing vehicular pollution, announcing the deployment of over 2,000 electric buses alongside CNG buses to improve air quality.
However, Rai raised alarms about the influx of diesel buses from neighboring states, expressing concern over their contribution to pollution levels.
“We are writing to the Transport Ministers of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, requesting them to stop sending diesel buses to Delhi when pollution levels are high. Instead, they should send CNG or electric buses to help mitigate the pollution crisis,” he further added.
Delhi consistently ranks among the most polluted cities globally, with air quality deteriorating significantly in winter due to multiple factors, including crop burning, low wind speeds, and the widespread use of firecrackers during festivals.
The resulting pollution poses serious health risks to residents, highlighting the urgent need for effective measures to improve air quality.
