
NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan has been elected as the 15th Vice President of India after defeating opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy. He was declared the winner soon after voting concluded in the vice presidential election on Monday.
Radhakrishnan, backed by the ruling NDA, secured 452 votes. Sudershan Reddy of the INDIA bloc received 300 votes. The electoral college, comprising members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, had a total strength of 781.
The NDA had announced CP Radhakrishnan as its vice-presidential candidate on 17 August.
Radhakrishnan, who belongs to the Goundar-Kongu Vellalar community of Maharashtra, entered the contest with strong backing. He defeated Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge from southern India.
A total of 315 MPs from the opposition bloc turned up to vote, the Congress confirmed. Voting for the vice presidential election began at 10 AM and continued till 5 PM.
With this victory, CP Radhakrishnan will succeed Jagdeep Dhankhar as the new Vice President of India. His election marks another key win for the NDA ahead of upcoming political battles.
The vice presidential election saw high participation from both Houses. Soon after the results, the NDA leadership congratulated Radhakrishnan on his victory and hailed it as a significant moment for the alliance.
