Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a financial assistance of ₹1,600 crore for flood-hit Punjab, in addition to ₹12,000 crore already available in the state’s kitty. He also declared an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those seriously injured in the Punjab floods and related calamities.
Children orphaned due to the disaster will receive long-term support under the PM CARES for Children scheme.

PM Modi conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected areas and later held a review meeting with officials and elected representatives. He assessed the damage and reviewed the relief and rehabilitation measures undertaken in Punjab.
PM Modi stressed the need for a multi-dimensional recovery plan, including:
- Rebuilding homes under PM Awas Yojana,
- Restoring highways,
- Reconstructing schools, and
- Providing relief through the PMNRF
Mini kits for livestock will also be distributed.
Assistance for Farmers and Rural Areas
Recognising the challenges faced by farmers, the Prime Minister announced additional aid for those without power connections. Support will be provided for refurbishing silted or swept-away bores under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana.
For diesel-powered bore pumps, the Centre will encourage solar panel convergence with MNRE. It will also promote micro-irrigation under the Per Drop More Crop guidelines.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin, financial aid will be given for the reconstruction of damaged rural houses under a special project proposed by the state.
Schools damaged in the Punjab floods will also be supported under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan.
Water Management and Central Oversight
The Centre will construct and repair recharge structures for rainwater harvesting under the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari programme. These measures aim to enhance groundwater levels and ensure long-term water sustainability.
Inter-Ministerial Central teams have already been deployed to assess damages, and further support will be considered after their report.
PM Modi expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones and assured that the Union government will extend all possible assistance to Punjab. He appreciated the efforts of the NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army, and state administration for immediate relief operations.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister visited Himachal Pradesh and announced ₹1,500 crore for relief after floods and landslides there. He conducted an aerial survey and reviewed rehabilitation measures, reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to support disaster-hit states.
