Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah left Srinagar on Friday to assess the security situation in Jammu following a failed drone and missile attack by Pakistan.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the CM wrote, “Driving to Jammu now to take stock of the situation after last night’s failed Pakistani drone attack directed at Jammu city & other parts of the division.”
Meanwhile, the alert Indian security forces successfully intercepted and neutralised Pakistani drones and low-range missiles in several areas, including Jammu, Samba, and RS Pura.
The attempted aerial strikes targeted Jammu airport and other strategic defence locations but failed due to India’s robust air defence systems.
Terrorists, backed by Pakistani forces, attempted to infiltrate the Samba district along the international border around 11 PM on Thursday. However, the Border Security Force (BSF) swiftly acted and forced the intruders to retreat into Pakistani territory.
A BSF spokesperson confirmed, “A major infiltration bid from across the international border was foiled late last night.”
Meanwhile, in the Uri sector of Baramulla district, heavy mortar shelling by the Pakistan Army led to civilian casualties.
A shell struck a vehicle travelling from Razerwani to Baramulla near Mohura, killing a woman identified as Nargis Begum and injuring another, Hafeeza Begum.
Pakistan continued to fire heavy mortars in Uri, Tangdhar, Poonch, Rajouri, along the Line of Control (LoC), and in Samba along the international border, escalating tensions in the region.
Following the severity of the situation, the authorities imposed a complete power blackout in Jammu and Srinagar cities shortly after sirens alerted residents to an imminent aerial threat.
While the blackout helped reduce visibility to enemy systems, electricity has been partially restored in both cities.
In light of the escalating border tension, the Jammu and Kashmir administration announced the closure of all private and government educational institutions. Schools, colleges, and universities will remain closed on Friday and Saturday to ensure the safety of students.
Sakina Itoo, the state education minister, stated, “Keeping in view the safety of students, all private and government schools, colleges, and universities shall remain closed on Friday and Saturday.”
The Registrar of Kashmir University also confirmed that classwork will remain suspended for the day.
