CBI Challenges Karnataka’s Withdrawal Of Consent For DK Shivakumar Probe In Supreme Court

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Karnataka government’s decision to withdraw consent for investigating Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. The CBI argues that the Congress-led Karnataka government’s withdrawal obstructs its probe into Shivakumar’s alleged disproportionate assets.

CBI’s Stand on Karnataka Consent Withdrawal

The Supreme Court had previously dismissed Shivakumar’s petition seeking to quash the CBI case. In October 2023, the Karnataka High Court refused to halt the probe, directing the CBI to complete its investigation in three months. However, the recent withdrawal of consent has stalled proceedings, prompting the CBI to approach the Supreme Court.

Allegations of Disproportionate Assets Against DK Shivakumar

The CBI registered the case against Shivakumar in 2020, alleging he amassed assets beyond known income sources during his tenure as a minister from 2013 to 2018. Shivakumar challenged the case in 2021. The Supreme Court previously quashed a 2018 money laundering case against him under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), citing procedural inconsistencies.

The Supreme Court will now address the CBI’s petition challenging Karnataka’s withdrawal of consent in the DK Shivakumar probe, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation.
