A man who is a dealer of precious stone was conned of foreign currency worth of Rs 26 lakhs by three people on Tuesday. The man went to meet his friends where the trio including two men and one women conned him, posing as customs official. The trio, accused him of smuggling foreign currency and then demanded the victim to handover his bag full of notes for an X-ray scan.
The police has arrested the woman but is looking for the other con man. The 33 year old dealer is from Tamil Nadu, he supplies precious stones to astrologers, pandits, maulavis and jewellers. Recently he made around 20 lakh rupees from a client which he carried with him to Mumbai. He stayed at a hotel in Dongri.
According to the complainant his two women friends who were flying to Dubai asked him for a loan for which he carried 25,000 UAE dirhams (Rs 6 lakh) to the airport. He felt uncomfortable while leaving his money in hotel so he also carried bag full of dollar with him. While he was waiting outside the departure gate, the trio approached him around 10:15 pm introducing themselves as customs official and said that they received information of him smuggling foreign currency.
A Police Official said, “On frisking him, the trio found the dirhams and demanded a bill for it. The complainant replied he did not have any. One of the accused took the complainant’s bag that had the dollars and said he would get it X-ray scanned.” The other two stayed with him and threatened him to handover him to police.
The complainant got suspicious when neither the bag nor any senior official arrived after which he started questioning the remaining two. The con man ran swiftly into the crowd but the women couldn’t as the complainant raised an alarm. After some time the dealer took the woman to Sahar Police Station where she was identified as Salma Bano from Karnataka. She is booked under charges of cheating.
