After the Pahalgam terrorist attack, India cancelled the Indus Water Treaty and announced it would stop the supply of Indus River water to Pakistan.
The government’s strong response to the killing of 26 people and the injuring of 20 has received broad political support.
However, Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Naresh Tikait has openly opposed the decision.
Naresh Tikait said, “It is wrong to blame all of Pakistan. Farmers everywhere need water. Stopping water supply will only harm innocent people and farmers, not terrorists.” He called the move to end the decades-old Indus Water Treaty unfair and warned of heavy agricultural losses on both sides of the border.
Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait also criticised the handling of the situation. While condemning the attack, he highlighted the deep impact it had on Kashmir’s tourism and livelihoods.
“The lives of Kashmiri people have been shattered,” he said, urging the government to focus on supporting affected communities.
The BKU spokesperson further added that instead of blaming Pakistan, authorities must investigate the real beneficiaries of communal violence within India.
“Identify those profiting from Hindu-Muslim hatred to prevent future attacks,” he said.
Naresh Tikait stressed that solving terrorism requires targeting the guilty, not punishing an entire nation. He also criticised the government’s military policies and cuts in security forces, claiming they have weakened national security.
The Pahalgam attack was initially claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba. Although TRF later denied involvement, public anger against Pakistan remains high.
The Indian government has promised strict action against those responsible.
