BJP Leaders Celebrate GST Reforms As Major Relief For Middle-Class Households

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council recently approved sweeping reforms, simplifying the tax structure by reducing the number of slabs to two primary rates — 5 per cent and 18 per cent — along with a higher 40 per cent slab for sin goods.

This revision is expected to leave more disposable income with the common man, encouraging greater spending and stimulating the economy.

Under the new framework, many items, including groceries, textiles, footwear, fertilisers, and renewable energy products, will become more affordable.

The GST Council will largely shift goods previously taxed at 12 per cent and 28 per cent into the two main slabs, easing financial pressure on middle-class families.

Virendra Sachdeva, BJP Delhi President, praised the reforms as the fulfilment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day promise.

Speaking to IANS, Sachdeva said, “On 15th August, from the ramparts of the Red Fort, the Prime Minister promised a big gift through GST reforms. That gift is now before the public. Household essentials have become cheaper, and with Navratri approaching, significant benefits will reach the medical and education sectors, along with other daily necessities.”

He added that the reforms would help families across income levels, from middle to lower-middle class, underpinning India’s emergence as a powerful global economy driven by the Prime Minister’s efforts.

Widespread Support Across Allies

JD(U) national spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan welcomed the reforms as a ‘bumper’ gift ahead of the festive season.

He highlighted the broad impact on homemakers, farmers, and traders, noting, “This is not just a Diwali gift for the middle class but also for the lower-middle class, especially homemakers. Farmers stand to gain significantly, and traders can now offer goods at lower prices despite global tariff challenges.”

BJP leader Dilip Ghosh echoed these sentiments, stressing the need to provide relief to the common people who ultimately bear the tax burden.

“The common people of the country pay the taxes that fuel the government’s revenue. Where possible, relief should be given to them. This is a big and very good step,” Ghosh told reporters.

Officials expect that the increased disposable income from GST cuts will cycle back into the economy, supporting growth and enhancing ease of living.

The reforms align with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of an inclusive economy that supports families and small businesses alike.

Many have widely embraced the GST Council’s decision as a strategic move to strengthen the economy by reducing tax burdens on essential goods, boosting consumer spending, and benefiting key sectors ahead of the crucial festive period.

The BJP and its allies view these GST reforms as a pivotal step towards economic prosperity and social welfare, reinforcing their commitment to improving the lives of ordinary Indians.

By streamlining tax rates and cutting costs on essential goods, the government aims to maintain momentum in India’s growth trajectory while providing tangible relief to millions of households across the country.
