GST Council

PM Narendra Modi on Saturday said that measures such as GST simplification and citizen-first infrastructure demonstrate disciplined planning.

From 22 September 2025, health and life insurance premiums will be exempt from GST following the 56th GST Council meeting.

The GST Council, led by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, cut the GST on hotel rooms priced below ₹7,500 to 5 per cent without input tax credit (ITC).

The GST Council has simplified India’s tax structure by retaining only 5% and 18% slabs from 22 September 2025.

The GST Council approved major reforms, cutting tax slabs and lowering rates on numerous essential goods and services.

The GST Council on Wednesday approved historic changes to India’s indirect tax system by adopting a simplified 5 per cent and 18 per cent structure.

PM Modi praised the GST Council for cutting slabs to two, adding that the Union Government has prepared proposals for broad-based rate rationalisation and process reforms.

The GST Council approved a two-tier tax structure of 5 per cent and 18 per cent on Wednesday. The new rates will apply from 22 September.

The Finance Ministry sent a proposal to the GST Council for a new two-tier GST structure with rates of 5% and 18% for all goods.
