NDA Holds Bihar Bandh Over Derogatory Remarks Against PM Modi’s Mother

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) enforced a five-hour bandh in Bihar on Thursday to protest abusive remarks made from a Congress stage in Darbhanga targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother during the party’s ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’.

The bandh, which lasted from 7 AM to 12 noon, excluded essential services and had a partial impact across districts.

Supporters of the BJP, JD(U), LJP (Ram Vilas), HAM, and RLM were seen in areas like Siwan, Ara, Darbhanga, and Patna, carrying flags and shouting slogans.

Protesters forced shops to shut, disrupted traffic, and called for public support in condemning the remarks.

Traffic movement slowed in parts of Bihar, while police maintained order in central Patna, including Income Tax junction, keeping traffic relatively normal.

Several schools in Patna remained closed as a precautionary measure. In many towns, residents chose to stay indoors amid uncertainty and road blockades.

Cultural and Emotional Outrage

NDA leaders described the comments as an insult not just to the Prime Minister’s mother but to 140 crore Indians. They stressed that in Indian culture, a mother holds a sacred status, and such language was an assault on the nation’s social and democratic values.

The BJP Mahila Morcha led prominent protests across districts, with women leaders issuing strong statements.

“Abusing a mother who carries a child for nine months is not just indecent — it’s a direct attack on our culture,” said a Mahila Morcha leader in Patna.

Political Pressure on the Opposition

The NDA accused the Mahagathbandhan and the INDIA bloc of refusing to apologise, even though senior Congress leaders heard the remarks during Rahul Gandhi’s yatra.

NDA leaders demanded strict action against those responsible and warned that if no apology or accountability follows, the agitation will intensify beyond the one-day bandh.

They framed the issue as not just political, but deeply emotional, tapping into sentiments of family honour and cultural reverence.

“This is now a battle for the dignity of motherhood. We will not compromise,” said a senior BJP spokesperson.

Through this bandh, the NDA sought to mobilise public sentiment, corner the opposition, and reaffirm its stance as a defender of Indian values and traditions.

While the protest drew varied responses across the state, it firmly placed the emotional narrative of cultural respect and personal honour at the centre of Bihar’s political discourse.
