The second phase of the Bihar Assembly elections 2025 witnessed a voter turnout of 14.55% till 9 AM, according to data released by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
This marks a slight increase from the 13.13% turnout recorded during the same period in the first phase, reflecting an encouraging start to polling across the state.
Among the 20 districts, Gaya recorded the highest turnout of 15.97%, followed by Kishanganj (15.81%) and Jamui (15.77%). The lowest turnout was recorded in Madhubani (13.25%).
Other districts with notable figures included Purnia (15.54%), Aurangabad (15.43%), Araria (15.34%), and Bankura (15.14%), indicating steady participation despite early morning weather conditions.
Polling began at 7 AM across 122 constituencies in 20 districts, covering approximately 3.7 crore electors. Voters queued up early to cast their ballots, maintaining order under tight security arrangements.
This phase will play a decisive role in determining the political fortunes of 12 ministers from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s cabinet, including Vijendra Yadav (Supaul), Lesi Singh (Dhamdaha), Jayant Kushwaha (Amarpur), Sumit Singh (Chakai), Mohammad Jama Khan (Chainpur), and Sheela Mandal (Phoolparas).
From the BJP, key ministers in the fray are Prem Kumar (Gaya), Renu Devi (Bettiah), Vijay Kumar Mandal (Sikati), Nitish Mishra (Jhanjharpur), Neeraj Bablu (Chhatapur), and Krishnanandan Paswan (Harsiddhi).
Key Constituencies and Political Stakes
Out of the 122 seats, East Champaran leads with 11 constituencies going to the polls, followed by 10 each in Madhubani and Gaya, and nine in West Champaran.
Other key battlegrounds include Sasaram, Imamganj, Mohania, Bhagalpur, and Nathnagar — all of which witnessed competitive campaigns.
In the 2020 Assembly elections, the BJP won 42 of these 122 seats, followed by RJD (33), JD(U) (20), Congress (11), and Left parties (5).
This phase, therefore, remains crucial for both the NDA and Mahagathbandhan, each seeking to consolidate its position ahead of the final phase.
The NDA — comprising the BJP, JD(U), HAMS, and LJP (RV) — is aiming to retain power for a second term, while the Mahagathbandhan, led by the RJD and Congress, hopes for a comeback.
Jan Suraaj, led by Prashant Kishor, also contests with growing confidence.
First Phase Sets Record Turnout
The first phase of polling saw a record 65.08% voter turnout — the highest in Bihar’s electoral history.
Political analysts believe this enthusiasm could continue through subsequent phases, with both alliances interpreting high participation as a sign of voter confidence in their respective narratives.
As voting progresses under heavy security, the focus now shifts to maintaining peace and ensuring maximum participation across the remaining constituencies.
The counting of votes for all 243 seats is scheduled for 14 November 2025, which will determine the next government in Bihar.
