More than 500 residents of Manipur, a state struck hard by conflict, have reached the Cachar region of Assam and taken refuge there.
Numal Mahatta, Superintendent of Police (SP), Cachar district, informed ANI that the district administration has made all arrangements for the people who come from Manipur and entered the district.
The Cachar SP said, “They are now taking shelter in various parts of the district. We have made all arrangements for them in a few schools and other places in the district. We are monitoring the situation”.
Earlier, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, claimed that several families impacted by the recent events in Manipur have sought asylum in Assam.
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “I have requested the District Administration of Cachar to take care of these families”.
“I am also in constant communication with the Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and have pledged the full support of the Assam Government during this hour of crisis”, he added.
In light of the situation in Manipur, Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducted two video conference sessions and spoke with the Chief Ministers of Manipur and adjoining states such as Nagaland, Mizoram, and Assam earlier on Thursday.
Violence erupted on May 3 during a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ planned by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in the Torbung area of Churachandpur district to protest Meiteis’ demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
As a result, the state administration issued a prohibitory order and suspended internet service throughout the state for five days. A night curfew has been enforced in numerous parts of the state, in addition to a prohibition on big gatherings.
