Delhi Police detained around 200 people at Jantar Mantar and nearby areas on Saturday as members of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) gathered for a proposed protest against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, officials said.
Police heightened security across the national capital ahead of the demonstration. Officers checked vehicles at Delhi’s borders and deployed personnel equipped with body cameras to document potential incidents during the protest.
Earlier, police detained CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and party spokespersons Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka at Indira Gandhi International Airport as they arrived in Delhi for the demonstration.
Police boarded Dipke’s aircraft after it landed and detained all three members. Dipke shared a video online, saying, “…I have come here to be arrested; arrest me.”
The CJP announced the detentions in a social media post, stating: “Abhijeet Dipke DETAINED! Saurav Das DETAINED! Ashutosh Ranka DETAINED!”
Social media influencer Dhruv Rathee was reportedly detained at his residence in Gurugram. According to a CJP post on X, around 50 plainclothes police personnel reached his home at approximately 8 a.m. and took him into custody.
Authorities strengthened security outside the residences of CEC Gyanesh Kumar and Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Police deployed drones to monitor key locations and conducted security marches.
Several Metro stations, including Supreme Court and Mandi House, were closed as part of the arrangements. At New Delhi Railway Station, Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force personnel remained deployed while drones monitored the premises.
