Delhi Police detained Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke and party members Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Saturday ahead of their planned protest at Jantar Mantar, police said.
Police personnel entered the aircraft carrying Dipke after it landed at the airport. Dipke shared a video on social media showing officers boarding the flight and detaining him and the two other CJP members.
In the video, Dipke can be heard telling the police, “…I have come here to be arrested; arrest me.”
The CJP confirmed the detentions through a social media post, stating: “Abhijeet Dipke DETAINED! Saurav Das DETAINED! Ashutosh Ranka DETAINED!”
The detentions came ahead of the party’s planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Dipke had left Mumbai for Delhi earlier on Saturday to lead the protest.
Earlier, Gurugram Police reportedly detained YouTuber Dhruv Rathee at his residence ahead of the demonstration. Rathee had attended a protest against the SIR process in Bengaluru on Thursday.
Delhi Police have heightened security across the national Capital ahead of the planned gathering. Officers are checking vehicles at the city’s borders and wearing body cameras to record any untoward incidents.
Authorities have strengthened security outside the residences of CEC Gyanesh Kumar and Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Police are conducting drone surveillance at key locations. Several Metro stations, including Supreme Court and Mandi House, have also been closed as part of the security measures.
