A day after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced plans to introduce two controversial Bills one targeting ‘Love Jihad’ and another imposing restrictions on land transactions between Hindus and Muslims All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal strongly criticized the proposals.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Ajmal denounced the Chief Minister’s proposals as unjust. “Every citizen of this country has the right to buy land in Assam,” Ajmal asserted. “It is regrettable that the Chief Minister is pushing for a law that would discriminate against certain communities. This is further a gross injustice, and our party will staunchly oppose any such legislation.”

Ajmal accused Sarma of proposing these laws to court Hindu voters in anticipation of the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. “It seems the Chief Minister’s aim is to appease Hindu voters at the expense of fundamental rights,” he said.
The AIUDF leader also alleged that Sarma’s actions undermine the constitutional rights of Muslims. “The Chief Minister’s recent repeal of the Muslim Marriage Registration Act of 1935 has caused widespread dissatisfaction among citizens,” Ajmal claimed. “Himanta Sarma should understand the anger of the people by engaging with them directly.”
Ajmal advised Sarma to refrain from making statements targeting specific communities and reminded him of the democratic principles governing the country. “Our nation operates on democratic values, and the Chief Minister should respect this,” he added.
Significant Development
Furthermore, Ajmal criticized Sarma’s tenure, claiming that the Chief Minister has failed to deliver significant development in Assam. “The government’s work is largely funded by the World Bank, not by any real progress made locally,” he alleged.
Moreover, regarding the ‘Love Jihad’ law proposed by Sarma, which includes a life sentence for offenders, Ajmal noted that similar inter-religious marriages among prominent figures in Bollywood have not faced such scrutiny. “This proposed law seems out of step with how such matters are treated elsewhere,” he said.
Sarma’s remarks on Sunday suggested that the state government will soon introduce legislation to address ‘Love Jihad’ and impose restrictions on land sales to Muslims, a move that has sparked significant controversy and debate.
