A London-bound Air India flight carrying over 200 passengers crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday. The crash triggered a massive emergency response. The incident took place near the Meghaninagar area of the city.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi immediately spoke to Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu. He took stock of the Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad. The Minister, who was in Vijayawada for the NDA Government’s first anniversary, rushed to the site.
PM Modi directed the Minister to ensure full support is provided. He also asked for regular updates. All relevant agencies remain on high alert. A coordinated response is now underway.
Taking to X, Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu posted, “Shocked and devastated to learn about the flight crash in Ahmedabad. We are on highest alert. I am personally monitoring the situation and have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action.”
“Rescue teams have been mobilised, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site. My thoughts and prayers are with all those on board and their families,” the post added.
The Minister remains in contact with senior officials of DGCA, AAI, NDRF, and the Gujarat administration. He is personally overseeing rescue work and response coordination. Passenger safety remains the top priority.
Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran confirmed the tragic crash. “With profound sorrow, I confirm that Air India flight AI 171 operating Ahmedabad–London–Gatwick was involved in a tragic accident today,” he said.
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event,” he added.
Air India has activated an emergency centre. It has also set up a support team for families seeking information.
Meanwhile, dramatic visuals from the site showed thick grey smoke rising into the sky. Smoke was visible from several kilometres away, including Vastrapur. Eyewitnesses reported panic and confusion. Sirens blared as emergency vehicles arrived. Locals gathered at a safe distance.
Firefighters, police, and medical teams reached the site quickly. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also joined the rescue effort. However, officials have not released casualty details or the crash cause. Authorities urged the public to stay away from the area to avoid hampering emergency work.
