Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani expressed deep sorrow on Thursday following the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 near Ahmedabad airport.
The London-bound Boeing 787-8 aircraft, carrying 242 people including crew members, went down shortly after takeoff, leading to a major emergency response.
Taking to social media platform X, Adani wrote, “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragedy of Air India Flight 171. Our hearts go out to the families who have suffered an unimaginable loss.”
He added that the Adani Group is working closely with all authorities and is “extending full support to the families on the ground.”
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) officials confirmed that they have temporarily suspended all flight operations.
An SVPIA spokesperson advised passengers to check with their respective airlines for the latest updates before proceeding to the airport.
The airport authorities also shut down all surrounding roads to facilitate the quick movement of rescue teams and emergency services.
“We request your cooperation and patience as authorities manage this evolving situation,” the spokesperson added.
Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu, who was attending events in Vijayawada to mark the NDA government’s first anniversary, immediately flew to Ahmedabad upon receiving news of the crash.
In a statement, Air India confirmed that Flight AI171 departed from Ahmedabad at 13:38 hours.
Onboard were 242 passengers and crew, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian national, and seven Portuguese nationals.
The airline stated that they are taking the injured to the nearest hospitals, but have not yet confirmed the number of fatalities or the cause of the crash.
Authorities have launched an investigation and rescue operations are ongoing at the crash site.
