AIADMK Rethinks of Allying with Saffron Party After Tamil Nadu BJP Chief’s Dig At Jayalalithaa

AIADMK, the BJP’s lone ally in Tamil Nadu, said that it may reconsider its ties with the saffron party if it will not keep its state party chief K Annamalai in check. The southern ally, already displeased with K Annamalai’s provocative remarks, has led such a demand from BJP.

Mr. Annamalai, said something that the AIADMK finds difficult to ignore. He implied in an interview with an English daily that AIADMK former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was found guilty of having disproportionate assets.

Although VK Sasikala, a Jayalalithaa aide, and a few other individuals were finally found guilty by the Supreme Court in a case involving disproportionate assets in which the former Chief Minister was the prime suspect. Jayalalithaa passed away before the judgement was rendered. The top court’s decision effectively overturned the Karnataka High Court’s positive decision, but it did not officially find her guilty.

The AIADMK was offended by the comments and threatened to “rethink the alliance” if Mr. Annamalai wasn’t punished.

Senior party leader D Jayakumar said, “Annamalai is not qualified to be a state president of a party. He should mind his words. We suspect he doesn’t want the alliance to continue nor does he want Prime Minister Modi to win again”.

Additionally, the AIADMK had lost four straight elections that it had contested alongside the BJP, including Lok Sabha, assembly, and local body elections. According to reports, BJP top strategist Amit Shah set his party’s goal of 25 MP seats in the state during an internal meeting on Sunday, sparking suspicion in the AIADMK camp that the national party intended to run candidates for 25 of 39 seats in state.
