Ahmedabad Plane Crash: BJ Medical College Hostel Hit, MMBS Exams Cancelled

Ahmedabad Plane Crash: In the aftermath of the catastrophic Air India Flight AI-171 crash near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, BJ Medical College (BJMC) has cancelled all ongoing and scheduled internal MBBS examinations.

A Boeing Dreamliner struck the college’s hostel and mess building, directly impacting the campus and leaving students severely traumatised.

The crash affected over 500 students, especially those in their first and second years, as the aircraft’s wing struck the hostel that housed both their living quarters and dining hall.

The mess, located on the first and second floors of the building, is no longer functional, leaving residents and interns without access to regular meals or services.

As a result, more than 200 students have vacated the hostel and returned to their homes, unable to cope with the psychological stress.

According to college officials, at least 40 students remain in a state of deep shock and distress.

Exam deferred indefinitely after crash

“In light of the current mental and emotional state of our students, and the logistical disruption caused by the collapse of the mess-cum-hostel building, all internal theory and practical exams stand postponed until further notice,” a senior BJMC official said.

Officials stated they will reschedule the examinations only after students recover from the trauma.

In another urgent move, BJMC has cancelled the scheduled summer vacation for all medical faculty and doctors.

The college took proactive action by cancelling the second phase of the vacation, originally scheduled to begin on 13 June, and directed all medical staff to report for duty from 14 June to meet the rising demand for medical care at Civil Hospital, where many crash victims are undergoing treatment.

BJMC doctors are providing critical care as part of the emergency response.

Meanwhile, political activity has intensified following the death of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in the crash.

His son, Rishabh Rupani, arrived in Gandhinagar from the US on Saturday, while his wife Anjali, returned from London a day earlier via a special chartered flight.

Senior BJP leaders, including Health Minister Rushikesh Patel and Union Minister Parshottam Rupala, have visited the family residence in Gandhinagar to express their condolences.

According to party sources, the final rites will be performed in Rajkot, Rupani’s hometown.
