On Tuesday, 71 Questions asked by 92 opposition MPs who were suspended from Parliament on Monday were deleted or cancelled. In Lok Sabha, a total of 27 Questions were deleted. In Rajya Sabha, 44 Questions were cancelled.
On Monday, December 18, a total of 78 opposition members of parliament were suspended from both houses, bringing the number of suspended members to 92 since December 15. In Rajya Sabha, 45 MPs were suspended, compared to 33 in the Lok Sabha.
A total of 14 MPs, ie thirteen from the Lok Sabha and one from the Rajya Sabha—were suspended on December 14.
Amit Shah, the Union home minister, was asked by opposition MPs for a statement regarding the security breach that occurred in parliament on December 13 when two men jumped from the public gallery into the Lok Sabha hall and opened smoke canisters. This is why the suspensions happened.
Rajya Sabha MP and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said that “democratic norms are being thrown into the dustbin by an autocratic Modi Govt by suspending 47 MPs.” He further added, “This is not good for democracy.”
Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor said, “It is ‘shocking’ to see MPs suspended for demanding accountability from the government in a parliamentary system.”
