4 killed in Kochi bomb blast as 62-year-old woman dies due to burn injuries

A 62-year-old woman passed away from burn injuries at a private hospital in Kalamassery, Kochi, on Monday, bringing the total number of people killed in the bomb blasts that occurred on October 29 to four.

The deceased was identified as Kalamassery resident Molly Joy Mathew. She had suffered over 80% burns from the IED explosions that occurred during a zonal convention of the worldwide Christian sect Jehovah’s Witnesses.

“With profound grief, we deeply regret to inform the tragic demise of our dear aunty Molly Joy Mathew. She was undergoing treatment post her injuries at the Kalamassery blast. Our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends,” the Jehovah’s Witnesses said in a statement.

“Molly, while undergoing treatment for the burns at the Ernakulam Medical Centre, suffered a cardiac arrest in the early hours of Monday. She passed away at 5 am today,” said TA Sreekumar, regional spokesperson of the Christian group.

According to him, two private hospitals are currently treating three more victims of the bomb explosions who are in critical condition.

On Monday, the Ernakulam District and Sessions Court is scheduled to deliberate upon a petition filed by the state police’s special investigation team, which seeks custody of Dominic Martin, the only accused in the blast case. On October 31, the court sent Martin, a 57-year-old Gulf returnee and former English tutor, on judicial remand for a period of 30 days. Martin had taken the sole responsibility for the explosions.
