Three explosions at a convention centre in Kalamassery, Kerala, on Sunday morning resulted in one woman’s death and 52 injuries, according to police. At least 10 victims suffered more than 50 percent burns. On Monday at 10:00 a.m., the Secretariat will host an all-party meeting called by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Over the explosions, he is probably going to chair a high-level meeting.

Confirming that one woman died and two other people were in critical condition, Pinarayi Vijayan said, “It’s a very unfortunate incident. We are collecting details regarding the incident. All top officials in Ernakulam are there. We are taking it very seriously. I have spoken to the DGP and we will get more details after the investigation.”

The explosions took place at a Christian organization’s convention centre. Along with the local police, a four-person NIA team hurried to the scene to look into the situation. In addition, an officer-led team of eight members of the National Security Guard (NSG) is en route to Kerala to investigate the explosion. By Sunday night, the team should arrive at the site of the bomb explosion.

The blast was reported to the police at about nine in the morning. Images from the scene showed a large police and fire rescue team evacuating people from the area.

Health Minister Veena George said, “Around 40 people were injured. A ten-year-old child has got severe burns and is in critical condition. One person died and her body is at Kalamassery Medical College. Seven are in ICU at Kalamassery Medical College. We might not have a major increase in the number of injured people. But the number might reach upto 50.”

All health professionals, including doctors, who are on leave are instructed to return right away by Health Minister Veena George. In order to give the best care possible to those hurt in the explosion in Kalamassery, she has also notified the directors of the departments of health and medical education.
