Isabgol, also known as psyllium husk, is obtained from the seeds of Plantago ovata and is commonly used to support digestive health. Rich in soluble fibre, it can help improve bowel movements and is often used to manage constipation.

Nutritionist and weight-loss coach Leema Mahajan recently shared guidance on how and when to consume isabgol, while explaining its potential digestive benefits.

The husk contains more than 70% fibre, most of which is soluble. It provides minerals such as calcium, iron and phosphorus.

Isabgol can help soften stools and promote regular bowel movements. Some people use it to manage bloating and gas, although its effects can differ from person to person.

For those beginning to use isabgol, Mahajan recommends taking around 3 to 5 grams with approximately 250ml of water. It can be consumed in the morning on an empty stomach or around 30 minutes before dinner.

The husk should be mixed well with water and consumed immediately, as it can become thick if left standing. It is important to drink another glass of water afterwards and maintain adequate hydration throughout the day so the fibre can work effectively.

Isabgol should not be relied on as the sole solution for persistent constipation.

Mahajan advises against taking it continuously for more than 10 to 15 days without medical guidance.

Along with isabgol, a fibre-rich diet, sufficient water intake and regular physical activity can support digestive health.

If constipation continues, consulting a doctor can help identify and address the underlying cause.
