Experts Warn Of Vitamin D Deficiency In Women, Link To Osteoporosis

Vitamin D deficiency, a crucial factor in bone health, remains a significant concern among women, experts warned on Saturday. Low levels of the “sunshine vitamin” can lead to osteoporosis, arthritis, and other bone-related issues, making it essential for women to prioritize vitamin D intake.

“Maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D is paramount for optimal bone health, yet it remains a pressing concern, particularly among women. This deficiency can lead to serious health implications, with osteoporosis emerging as a significant concern, especially among women post-menopause due to hormonal changes,” Sagar Hingrajiya, Consultant Orthopaedic, Bhailal Amin General Hospital, Vadodara stated.

Vitamin D plays a vital role in calcium absorption, bone development, repair, and muscular function. However, women are more prone to deficiency due to age, inadequate sun exposure, and hormonal changes post-menopause. Experts emphasize the importance of maintaining adequate vitamin D levels, especially for women over 40, to prevent osteoporosis and fractures.

“Regular monitoring of vitamin D levels is crucial, particularly for women over 40 who are at higher risk of developing osteoporosis. Persistent low levels of vitamin D necessitate intervention, often in the form of prescribed supplements tailored to individual needs. However, indiscriminate supplementation without medical guidance can lead to adverse effects, underscoring the importance of seeking professional advice,” Hingrajiya said.

Regular monitoring and supplementation, if necessary, can help mitigate the risks. Spending time in midday sunlight (10-30 minutes, several times a week) and consuming vitamin D-rich foods like fatty fish, fortified dairy products, mushrooms, and eggs can help maintain adequate levels. Consult a doctor for appropriate supplementation and regular testing, especially if at risk.

Don’t overlook the crucial role of vitamin D in bone health. Take proactive steps to ensure adequate levels and protect your bones.
