Heavy rains have drenched Mumbai and surrounding coastal areas overnight, causing significant waterlogging and flooding that has disrupted daily life.
Officials reported severe impacts across the city and state as the downpour, which began around midnight, continued through the night and is likely to persist throughout the day.
The relentless rainfall has led to extensive waterlogging in several key areas of Mumbai, including Dadar, Wadala, Parel, Kurla, Bhandup, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Kandivali, and Borivali.
The Andheri subway has submerged under 4-5 feet of water, forcing its closure.
Pumps have been deploye across various subways, including those at Dahisar, Kandivali, Malad, Santacruz, Khar, and Mankhurd, to remove the accumulated floodwaters
Flooding in Kandivali, Malad, and Goregaon has severely impacted traffic, causing congestion on the Eastern Express Highway and slow-moving vehicles on the Western Express Highway.
While Western Railway services have maintained normal operations, the Central Railway and Harbour Line services have experienced delays of 10-15 minutes in some areas.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), encompassing Palghar, Thane, and Raigad, has also faced disruptions in local and inter-city traffic.
In response to heavy rains and waterlogging, Nagpur schools have closed, and Gadchiroli and Chandrapur are under a red alert for the day.
A red alert has also been issued in Ratnagiri.
Meanwhile, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai recorded average rainfall of 91 mm in the city, 93 mm in the western suburbs, and 87 mm in the eastern suburbs over the past 12 hours up to 8 AM on Saturday.
The BMC forecasts continued moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the day, with the potential for very heavy downpours in some locations.
