Manipur recorded 29 fresh Covid-19 cases on Friday, pushing the total number of infections to 82.

Health officials confirmed the latest cases from three districts of the Imphal Valley — Imphal West, Imphal East and Thoubal.

Among the new cases, Imphal West accounted for 22, Imphal East six, and Thoubal one. Officials said the Friday tally included:

  • 52 cases from Imphal West,
  • 21 from Imphal East,
  • 4 from Bishnupur,
  • 2 each from Thoubal and Tengnoupal, and
  • 1 from Kakching

Except for Tengnoupal, all affected districts fall within the Imphal Valley region.

Health officials sound alert as cases spread

Earlier this month, on June 9, a 23-year-old woman from Bishnupur became the first confirmed Covid-19 case in the current wave. She had developed symptoms and got tested at a private clinic in Imphal on June 5. Her report came positive on June 9.

Manipur Health Services Director Dr Chambo Gonmei urged people to remain alert, considering the spread of the virus in other parts of the country. He emphasised the need for early testing and adherence to Covid-appropriate behaviour.

Governor chairs review meeting on Covid response

Meanwhile, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla chaired a Covid-19 review meeting at the Raj Bhavan. Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh, senior health officials, and other authorities attended the session.

The meeting followed recent directives from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), which called for enhanced preparedness amid concerns of a possible resurgence.

According to a Raj Bhavan official, health authorities briefed the Governor on key preparedness areas — diagnostics, oxygen supply, ICU and isolation wards, protective equipment, and essential drugs. They also discussed the IDSP–IHIP portal status and challenges like testing capacity and hospital readiness.

The Governor stressed the need for proactive measures, sufficient infrastructure, and community awareness. He said such steps are crucial to keep the state equipped to manage any fresh surge in Covid-19 cases.
