The Union Cabinet approved a significant allocation of Rs 8,800 crore on Friday to bolster the Skill India Programme. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the funding would enhance the country’s skill development efforts, providing greater opportunities for the youth to acquire industry-relevant skills.
The approved funds will specifically target three key schemes under the Skill India Programme: PM Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 (PMKVY 4.0), PM National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (PM-NAPS), and Jan Shikshan Sansthan for Skill Development.
Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “It is a mission of PM Modi to create opportunities for the youth. Therefore, the Rs 8,800-crore Skill India Programme has been approved, with a focus on convergence and quality.”
PM Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0: Demand-Driven Skill Development
The PM Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 (PMKVY 4.0) will focus on demand-driven skill development, providing training and certification to young people in industry-relevant fields.
The scheme will also prioritize short-term training programs along with upskilling and reskilling opportunities, ensuring that individuals equipped with the latest skills required in the job market.

Meanwhile, the PM National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (PM-NAPS) will incentivize industries to hire apprentices, facilitating a smooth transition from school to work through hands-on experience.
This scheme will cover both the manufacturing and services sectors, in alignment with the provisions of the Apprentices Act, 1961.
The Jan Shikshan Sansthan for Skill Development will focus on providing community-based skill training, particularly for marginalized groups, including women and rural youth.
This initiative aims to foster self-employment and local entrepreneurship by offering flexible training opportunities at the doorstep of beneficiaries.
The Rs 8,800-crore allocation underscores the government’s commitment to empowering India’s youth with the necessary skills to thrive in today’s dynamic job market. By enhancing these key schemes, the Skill India Programme aims to address the skill gap and create meaningful employment opportunities across the country.
