Indian equities started Wednesday’s trading session on a weak note as investors turned cautious due to growing geopolitical uncertainty, with the BSE Sensex tumbling more than 800 points in early deals and the NSE Nifty slipping below key levels as selling pressure intensified across the market.
The information technology segment recorded the steepest losses among sectoral indices.
Shares of major IT companies came under heavy selling, dragging the broader technology index lower.
Weakness was also visible in real estate, banking, financial services, and media sectors.
Tata Consultancy Services emerged among the worst-performing blue-chip stocks, while Tech Mahindra, Infosys, and HCLTech also registered notable declines.
Financial stocks such as Bajaj Finserv, Axis Bank, and Shriram Finance added to the downward momentum.
Market sentiment remained fragile as concerns surrounding developments between Washington and Tehran resurfaced.
The lack of clarity over diplomatic progress and fears of further instability in the Gulf region prompted investors to reduce exposure to riskier assets.
Experts believe that sustained geopolitical uncertainty could continue to influence market direction in the near term, particularly if it results in prolonged volatility in energy markets.
Oil markets remained firm as traders assessed the implications of the latest geopolitical developments. Brent crude advanced beyond $97 per barrel, while US benchmark WTI crude also recorded strong gains, approaching the $96 mark.
Higher crude prices are closely monitored in India due to their potential impact on inflation, import costs, and overall economic activity.
Across Asia, trading activity reflected a mixed trend. Japan’s Nikkei posted strong gains, whereas Hong Kong and Indonesia witnessed declines as investors reacted differently to regional and global developments.
Major US stock indices ended the previous session with marginal gains. The performance reflected a relatively cautious outlook among global investors.
Broader market segments also faced pressure, with both mid-cap and small-cap stocks registering losses.
The India VIX surged significantly, signalling a rise in investor nervousness. The increase also pointed to expectations of greater market fluctuations in the coming sessions.
