Adani Airports will begin the phased redevelopment of Terminal 1 at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport from January 2027.
The first phase will focus on the North Section of Terminal 1B, with the airport operator planning the work in stages to limit disruption to passengers and airlines. Reports indicate that demolition of the section will begin on January 15, 2027.
Mumbai Airport handles around 55 million passengers annually, while the North Section accounts for roughly five million passengers a year.
Adani Airports said around 91 per cent of Mumbai Airport’s passenger traffic will remain unaffected during the redevelopment. The operator has also offered airlines the option of temporarily moving services to Navi Mumbai International Airport.
Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airport Holdings Limited, said the phased approach would allow the airport to continue operations while addressing safety concerns linked to the ageing terminal.
The redevelopment will raise Terminal 1’s annual passenger capacity from around 15 million to 20 million, according to the airport operator.
MIAL has held consultations with airlines on the future of Terminal 1 since 2020. The operator has also said that airlines’ historical slots will return once the new terminal becomes operational.
Navi Mumbai International Airport will provide an alternative for airlines during the redevelopment. The airport has already begun receiving traffic as Mumbai’s aviation network undergoes a phased redistribution.
The operator said Navi Mumbai Airport would also offer a 100 per cent discount on landing fees for new international flights. It plans to provide cash vouchers to eligible international passengers to offset differences in user development fees.
The phased redevelopment will allow Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports to operate as complementary facilities while Mumbai upgrades its ageing Terminal 1.
