Brazil led India 2-0 at half-time in their historic international football friendly at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday.
Estevao made a major impact in the opening 45 minutes, scoring one goal and assisting another as Brazil established a comfortable advantage.
India goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu produced two impressive saves to deny Vinicius Jr early in the contest. However, he made a minor error in the 29th minute that allowed Estevao to break the deadlock.
Brazil continued to control possession and create opportunities after taking the lead. Estevao remained central to their attacking moves and later provided the assist for Brazil’s second goal.
The result leaves India facing a difficult second half against one of international football’s most decorated teams.
The match marks the first time India have faced five-time FIFA World Cup winners Brazil in senior international football.
India entered the contest with confidence after securing an unprecedented 1-1 draw against World Cup participants Panama. The result had provided a major boost ahead of the high-profile encounter.
Brazil, meanwhile, arrived in Kolkata for the final stop of their Asian tour after playing two friendly matches against Australia.
A packed Salt Lake Stadium witnessed the historic encounter, with Brazilian stars Vinicius Jr, Marquinhos and Estevao all starting for the visitors.
India will now look to produce a stronger second-half display and reduce the deficit against the South American giants.
