Russia Praises India’s Leadership In Space Exploration; Highlights Gaganyaan Collaboration

Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, commended India’s growing leadership in space exploration during a Cosmonautics Day celebration held at the Russian House in New Delhi.

Speaking at the event, Alipov emphasized the strong Indo-Russian collaboration in space, particularly India’s upcoming manned space mission, Gaganyaan.

“India is one of the leaders in space exploration, and Russia is learning a lot from India,” Alipov said.

“We’re proud to be part of India’s forthcoming manned mission. Space exploration has always united nations,” he added.

Commemorating Space Legends On Cosmonautics Day

The event marked the anniversary of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s historic flight on April 12, 1961, when he became the first human to orbit the Earth.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled on the Russian House’s outer wall, honoring Gagarin along with Sergei Korolev and Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, two other pioneers of the Soviet space program.

Alipov reminded attendees of Gagarin’s warm reception in India following his space flight.

“After his historic flight, Gagarin visited India and was welcomed with great warmth,” he said.

Historic Ties: From Aryabhata To Gaganyaan

Alipov also paid tribute to Rakesh Sharma, India’s first astronaut, calling him a ‘rock-solid symbol’ of the enduring friendship between India and Russia.

He expressed optimism about continued cooperation in satellite navigation, manned missions, and broader scientific pursuits.

Adding to this, Rajiv Kumar Jaiswal, Officer on Special Duty at ISRO, recounted the journey of India’s space program and its roots in Russian support.

“India had no space programme when Gagarin went to space. But Russia supported us from the beginning, launching Aryabhata in 1975 and, later, Bhaskara I and II,” he said.

Future-Forward: Joint Training For Gaganyaan

Jaiswal highlighted that the collaboration continues into the future, with Gaganyaan astronauts currently undergoing training at Russia’s prestigious Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre.

“With Gaganyaan, India is preparing for a new era in human spaceflight, and Russia’s support remains instrumental,” he noted.

A Shared Vision For Peaceful Space Exploration

As India and Russia deepen their strategic space cooperation, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to using space for peaceful and scientific purposes.

The celebration of Cosmonautics Day served not just as a tribute to past milestones but as a reaffirmation of a shared future in space exploration.
