Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal praised APEDA for enabling the first sea shipment of Indian pomegranates to the US.
In a post on social media platform X, Goyal praised the shipment of the prized Bhagwa variety from Maharashtra, calling it a significant step in expanding India’s presence in the global agri-product market.

“Commendable efforts by @APEDADOC in facilitating the first commercial sea shipment of the prized Indian Bhagwa variety of pomegranates from Maharashtra to the US,” Goyal wrote. “This milestone reflects India’s growing strength in horticulture exports and will create new opportunities for farmers to tap into the rising global demand for high-quality agri-products,” he added.
Indian Pomegranates Gain Ground In US Market
The first 4,620-box (14-tonne) shipment of Bhagwa pomegranates from Maharashtra reached New York in mid-March.
The fruits received an overwhelmingly positive response in the US, with customers praising their excellent quality, attractive appearance, and superior taste.
The Commerce Ministry called the shipment a new beginning for Indian pomegranates in the US market. Officials see strong potential for the Bhagwa variety to become a favored choice among American consumers.
Government Support Drives Export Growth
APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev emphasised the government’s proactive role in promoting Indian fruits in international markets.
“The government has been at the forefront of promoting fresh Indian fruits to the global market. APEDA has supported exports to the US through initiatives like the pre-clearance programme,” he said.
Dev also highlighted that Indian farmers benefit from better price realisation when their produce reaches premium international markets.
“Indian mangoes already account for around 3,500 tonnes of annual exports to the US. We are optimistic that pomegranates will follow a similar trajectory in the coming years,” he added.
