CCEA Approves Multi-Tracking Projects To Expand Indian Railways Network

The CCEA has sanctioned four major multi-tracking projects in key Indian states to enhance rail infrastructure and freight capacity.

CCEA Approves Multi-Tracking Projects To Expand Indian Railways Network

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has given the green light to four significant multi-tracking projects across six states—Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand—at an estimated cost of Rs 11,169 crore.

The Indian Railways will expand its network by approximately 574 kilometres through these projects, aiming to complete them by the financial year 2028–29.

According to an official statement, these routes are vital for the transportation of coal, cement, clinker, gypsum, fly ash, containers, agricultural commodities, and petroleum products.

The capacity augmentation from these projects is expected to increase freight loading by 95.91 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

The projects include the fourth line addition between Itarsi and Nagpur, doubling of the Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) to Parbhani line, third and fourth lines between Aluabari Road and New Jalpaiguri, and the third and fourth lines between Dangoaposi and Jaroli.

Impact on Freight Capacity and Operational Efficiency

The expansion will significantly increase line capacity, which is crucial for improving mobility and reducing bottlenecks on these busy freight corridors.

Enhanced rail capacity will translate into better operational efficiency and greater reliability of services for Indian Railways.

With India’s growing industrial and agricultural output, the need for increased rail freight capacity has become paramount.

These projects align with the government’s focus on strengthening infrastructure to support economic growth, reduce logistics costs, and provide seamless connectivity to industries and markets across the country.

The multi-tracking will facilitate smoother and faster movement of essential commodities, thereby supporting industries that depend heavily on rail logistics.

By reducing congestion on existing lines, Indian Railways can optimise the utilisation of its network and offer more punctual services to both freight and passenger trains.

Overall, the CCEA’s approval of these projects marks a strategic step towards modernising the rail infrastructure in key regions, enabling sustainable growth in freight transport and enhancing the railway sector’s contribution to India’s economy.

These initiatives will create employment opportunities during the construction phase and significantly contribute to regional development once they become operational.

The increased freight capacity will also play a crucial role in supporting India’s push for greater industrial output and export competitiveness.

In conclusion, the multi-tracking projects sanctioned by the CCEA promise to boost the efficiency and capacity of Indian Railways, reinforcing its position as a backbone of the country’s transport infrastructure.

The timely completion of these projects will support the government’s broader goals of economic progress and improved logistics across six important states.
