Ghulam Nabi Azad Clarifies Speculation About Jammu And Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Role

Former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad clarified on Sunday that he has no interest in becoming the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, dispelling rumors to the contrary. The former Congress leader emphasized that his focus is on serving the people of Jammu and Kashmir and not seeking employment.

Addressing a rally to mark the foundation day of his Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), which he established last year after parting ways with the Congress, Ghulam Nabi Azad urged people not to believe the rumors circulating about his appointment as the next LG.

Azad emphasized his commitment to public service and reminded the audience of his history of leaving prestigious Union ministries, such as Housing and Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs, when he previously served as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 2005.

He acknowledged the pressing issues of unemployment and inflation facing the region and expressed his determination to address them by harnessing the tourism potential of Jammu and Kashmir. Azad pointed out that tourism has the potential to create livelihood opportunities for various segments of society.

Azad also criticized the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A by the Central government in 2019, referring to it as a “great mistake.” He explained that this decision had a significant impact on the state, causing uncertainty about land ownership.

Furthermore, Azad called for restraint in political discourse, urging party leaders not to engage in personal attacks against opponents. He also strongly advocated for the death penalty for individuals involved in the drug trade, which has become a pressing issue in Jammu and Kashmir.
