A 5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes China’s Shandong Province

More than 20 trains from Beijing, Tianjin, and Cangzhou were canceled

On Sunday, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake shook areas of eastern China, wounding 21 people and demolishing more than 100 buildings.

According to local media reports, the earthquake that struck Pingyuan County in Shandong Province at 2:33 a.m. was also felt in various regions in northern China, including Beijing and Tianjin, as well as the provinces of Henan and Hebei.

Pingyuan is located approximately 345 kilometres south of Beijing.

The tremor rattled furniture in homes and prompted individuals to seek protection outside, according to videos posted online.

More than 20 trains from Beijing, Tianjin, and Cangzhou were canceled.

According to China Railway Beijing Group Co, Ltd, 30 trains on the Shijiazhuang-Jinan High-speed Railway were also halted.

Local governments have begun an emergency response to coordinate rescue efforts and identify potential threats.
