Political tensions have risen in Delhi amid protests conducted in the name of Gen Z Neha Bora, national president of the All India Students’ Association (AISA), who has emerged as a prominent figure among demonstrators protesting against the Chief Election Commissioner.

Her participation in demonstrations at Jantar Mantar and Connaught Place has attracted attention.

Her remarks about Umar Khalid and Bangladesh’s student movement have since triggered controversy. A video circulating on social media has questioned her ideology and sources of inspiration.

At an event at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on October 15, Bora referred to Khalid, saying he had spent more than six years in jail without abandoning his fight for justice.

Bora said, “We learn activism here by looking at Umar Khalid. This JNU belongs to Umar Khalid.”

A Facebook page named ‘Shudracharya Rakesh Kumar’ subsequently questioned her remarks and asked who she regarded as her role model. Khalid is an accused in the case involving an alleged conspiracy linked to the 2020 Delhi riots.

Bangladesh Student Movement Draws Scrutiny

In a video message for the national conference of Bangladesh’s Socialist Students’ Front, Bora praised the country’s student movement. She said India’s Gen Z movement had originated in Bangladesh and congratulated its young people for showing the way.

A viral video used her comments to raise concerns about violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. Its creator called on Bora to clarify her views, but the remarks do not establish any links between her and a foreign organisation.

The video also mentioned actor Prakash Raj, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee and activist Abhijeet Deepke, making allegations about foreign political influences. However, it provided no concrete evidence to support these claims.

The creator named Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Maharana Pratap, Dr BR Ambedkar and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose as role models for Indian youth.

The debate continues, with supporters describing Bora’s remarks as solidarity with democratic movements and critics questioning her ideological influences.
