Delhi Mobilises Thousands For Yamuna Restoration Drive At 70 Ghats

Thousands of residents joined hands on Sunday to support the ‘Chalo Yamuna Campaign’, a citywide initiative focused on cleaning the river and reviving its surroundings.

Young volunteers, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), non-governmental organisations and public representatives contributed their time through ‘shramdaan’ at 70 locations along the Yamuna ghats and nearby areas.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta led the campaign and praised the widespread participation. She said lasting improvements in the river’s condition required citizens from every section of society to work alongside the government.

Gupta encouraged residents to become ‘Yamuna Praharis’ and make river conservation part of their everyday lives.

“Cleanliness is not just a campaign but a way of life, and ensuring that no waste reaches the Yamuna is our collective responsibility,” she said.

The Chief Minister cautioned people against dumping religious offerings, garments presented to deities, damaged idols, plastic packaging and other rubbish into the river or leaving such waste at its ghats.

She also urged residents to change their disposal habits and ensure that waste did not pollute the waterway.

“Keeping the Yamuna clean is not the responsibility of any single department or organisation but a shared responsibility of society as a whole,” she added.

Sewage Treatment and Drain Cleaning Underway

The Delhi government has prioritised measures to reduce the pollution entering the Yamuna.

Officials are establishing sewage treatment plants and also decentralised treatment facilities to intercept drains that carry wastewater into the river.

The administration is also carrying out large-scale desilting of drains as part of its efforts to address pollution at its source.

Yamuna restoration was a key issue in the BJP’s campaign ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections. The government says it has prioritised essential work to control pollutants discharged into the river.

The ‘Chalo Yamuna Campaign’ aims to strengthen cooperation between residents and government agencies.
